Bolanle Austen-Peters Makes Directorial Debut With “The Bling Lagosians.” [Teaser Review]

The Bling Lagosians is an upcoming Nollywood movie from the popular custodian of Nigerian arts and culture, Bolanle Austen-Peters’, production outfit. With the upcoming movie, the lawyer and businesswoman is also set to mark her debut as a feature film director. The Bling Lagosians tells the story of a powerful Lagos socialite who prepares for her flamboyant 51st birthday party, while her husband fights to prevent their family company’s huge debt from being exposed.

The teaser for the movie serves more as an appetite-whetter, as it doesn’t particularly reveal so much about the plot of the movie. From the teaser, we are exposed to what we would assume to be the Lagos experience of the filthy rich. And, as the movie title hints, the lavish Lagos life, royalty-esque attires, and glamorous and expensive cars all feature in the teaser for The Bling Lagosians. The teaser also puts the robust cast – something I’ve become wary of overtime with Nollywood movies – on display and gives glimpses of their performances.

I should mention that judging from all I’ve gathered about the movie, I’m getting substantial The Wedding Party/Chief Daddy vibes. I mean, aren’t all-star casts, stories about the upper class, grand parties, and family secrets/scandals – all of which are present in The Bling Lagosians – shrouded in a tepid storyline, the recipes of the aforementioned titles? While we don’t yet know the plot of The Bling Lagosians in full detail, we do hope, for Nollywood’s and Bolanle Austen-Peters’ sake, that this movie boasts a reasonable storyline.

According to the movie’s producer-director, the vision of the movie is to create something reflective of her own Lagos experience and relatable to others upper-class Lagosians. After co-producing 93 Days with Steve Gukas in 2016, The Bling Lagosians will be the second movie production from Bolanle Austen-Peters Production. Biola Austen-Peters’ production outfit has also produced stage plays like Saro the MusicalFela and the Kalakuta QueensQueen Moremi.

The Bling Lagosians is set to release in Nigerian cinemas on June 28, 2019. The movie stars Elvina Ibru, Monalisa Chinda, Bisola Aiyeola, Alexx Ekubo, Sharon Ooja, Broda Shaggi, Helen Paul, Osas Ighodaro, Tana Adelana, Ayoola Ayoola, Pasuma, Gbenga Titiloye, Jide Kosoko, and many others.
