It was first announced back in 2017 that British actress, singer, and songwriter, Cynthia Erivo would be playing the titular character in the upcoming biopic about iconic freedom fighter, Harriet Tubman. Following the announcement, anticipation for the biopic’s release has been high. Good news is, the trailer for the much-anticipated movie has now been released.
In the trailer, we see the Tony-winning actor and singer deliver a very convincing performance as the famed freedom fighter. Harriet follows Harriet Tubman’s journey from escaping slavery to becoming a legendary abolitionist and freedom fighter. The trailer, moving and climactic, proved to be befitting for the biopic and we see reasons why Harriet is already being talked about as a serious Oscar contender.
Based on the thrilling and inspirational life of an iconic American freedom fighter, Harriet tells the extraordinary tale of Harriet Tubman’s escape from slavery and transformation into one of America’s greatest heroes. Her courage, ingenuity, and tenacity freed hundreds of slaves and changed the course of history.
Harriet is directed by Kasi Lemmons (Eve’s Bayou), with Gregory Allen Howard as co-writer. The movie also stars Janelle Monáe as one of Tubman’s allies who helps prepare her for her mission back down south to lead others to freedom. Other members of cast incude Leslie Odom Jr., Jennifer Nettles, Joe Alwyn, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Clarke Peters, Henry Hunter Hall, Zackary Momoh, Deborah Ayorinde, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Omar Dorsey and Antonio J. Bell.
