Let me start out by saying this. I still would have sat through every single episode of 5ive even if it had turned out to be a terrible production. Why? Because it starred the latest addition to my constantly growing list of Nollywood crushes – which I will write about someday – in person of Ini Dima-Okojie. There you have it, confession made.
With that out of the way, let’s talk about the show. Created and produced by OLA, 5ive premiered online on the 3rd of November, 2016. Gladly, 5ive turned out to be far from a terrible production. Trust me, my emotional bias played no part in how I arrived at this conclusion, none whatsoever. If you ask me, I would say 5ive was by far one of the best indigenously web series of the previous calendar year. The main cast of the show, consisting of Udoka Oyeka, KC Ejelonu, Baaj Adebule, Asa’ah Samuel and Ini Dima-Okojie all put in noteworthy acting performances. Bimbo Ademoye also guest stars as Michelle on the show and she held her own.
A tale of love, loyalty and power, 5ive – as the title probably already implies – tells the story of five individuals who, unknown to them, have a sort of interconnectedness existing between them. A really weird one at that. Segun’s (Baaj Adebule) friend from way back, Kelvin, (Asa’ah Samuel) returns to Nigeria broke and unemployed from Liberia. In a bid to help him find his footing, Segun uses his influence to help Kelvin secure a job at the company where he works. A company headed by Nosa (Udoka Oyeka).
The crop of actors cast on the show is another noteworthy aspect of the show. The lineup of actors for the show is not one you would expect to see with “regular” indigenous web series. This immediately tells you that the producers of the show had nothing but excellence at the back of their minds.
However, I did wish Bimbo Ademoye’s character did not just appear and then disappear on us like that. I was actually hoping she would have a defining role to play in the concluding episodes.
I would not want to go into too much detail, ruining the fun and surprise. If you find yourself thinking about seeing an indigenously produced web series, 5ive is one you should consider.
