BOOK REVIEW – The Lean Startup by Eric Ries

Eric Ries The Lean Startup

The Lean Startup: How Today’s Entrepreneurs Use Continuous Innovation To Create Radically Successful Businesses – Eric Ries.

While it offered clarity on a lot of gray areas that have troubled my mind for a long time. Helping me make sense of conventional business practices and approaches that I have had doubts about. Eric Ries’ The Lean Startup left me with a whole lot of questions. These questions were, however, not questions that came as a result of an absence of clarity, no. These were questions that provoked critical thinking. Questions that challenged my mind to seek for answers birthed from a place of strong personal conviction.

I would love so much to believe that must have been the primal motivation of the author. To ultimately get the minds of his audience working. Not just to offer readers iron-clad rules, but to provoke them into thought. To appeal to the humanity in them, not just force-feed information into their heads like robots. Sadly, I believe some would still fall into the trap of the lazy habit of thinking from reading this book.

Presenting a scientific approach to entrepreneurial management, the ideas shared in this book are downright radical. From its advocating for the acceleration of production cycles, to shrinking production batch sizes. The Lean Startup also advocates for experimenting with minimum valuable products rather than wasting resources creating products that end up collecting dust on the shelf. If you find yourself in need a book to challenge you as an entrepreneur. Don’t think twice, The Lean Startup would be just the right book for you.

If you are an entrepreneur or you have considered or are considering becoming one someday. The Lean Startup by Eric Ries is one book that would do you a whole lot of good. A note of warning, this book might initially leave you even more confused than you were. It will clash with some of the beliefs you had about entrepreneurship, the most trusted ones especially.  But I can promise you one thing. Once those principles finally take shape in your mind, you will be very glad you took time out to read this book. The Lean Startup challenges a whole lot of conventional and traditional approaches to entrepreneurship we have accepted as standard.

At the end of the day, some of the ideas shared in this book would resonate with you, apply those. Expectedly, some ideas might seem impracticable or inapplicable to your startup, do not try forcing those.
